Often referred to as the "Hidden Valley," this region preserves deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist customs, visible in its ancient monasteries, intricately carved prayer stones (Mani walls), and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the wind. As you move through settlements like Chumling, Chhokangparo, and Nile, you’ll have time to adjust to the elevation. A side trip to the renowned Mu Gompa Monastery offers further cultural insight.
After traversing the Tsum Valley, the route reconnects with the main Manaslu Circuit via Nubri Valley. From there, the trail progresses through Sama Gaun, Samdo, and Dharmsala, leading toward the high mountain passes of the Manaslu region. The highlight comes at Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), where panoramic views of the surrounding peaks unfold. The trek gradually descends through Bhimtang, concluding in Dharapani.
This route stands out for its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes, offering a more secluded experience compared to other popular treks. It provides an authentic glimpse into Nepal’s high-altitude trekking culture while following a less-traveled path.
Additionally, the Manaslu Circuit features teahouse lodging, built-in rest days for acclimatization, and a quieter trail environment, making it ideal for those seeking both adventure and tranquility.
Highlights:
Your Manaslu journey typically begins with an early morning departure from Kathmandu, either by jeep or bus. The route follows the scenic Budhi Gandaki River Valley, winding through traditional villages, rolling hills, and breathtaking mountain vistas before arriving at Maccha Khola River—the official starting point of the trek. The road is narrow and uneven, curving up and down along the steep slopes above a deep gorge, making for a somewhat bumpy ride. As you leave behind the bustle of the capital, the landscape gradually shifts to reveal terraced farmland, gentle hills, and remote rural settlements. This transition marks the first glimpse of Manaslu’s striking natural charm.
Today begins your trekking journey along the Budhi Gandaki River. As you make your way forward, you'll encounter stunning views of deep river gorges and cross several suspension bridges. Along the route, you’ll pass through traditional settlements like Khorlabesi and Tatopani. The path then winds through a narrow river gorge, where the soothing sounds of flowing water accompany you until you reach the village of Jagat. Here, your trekking permits will be stamped for the first time.
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours
This morning, you’ll depart from the Manaslu Circuit route, leaving it to continue winding through forested and rocky slopes, and head instead toward the more secluded and less frequented paths of the Tsum Valley. Lokpa marks the entrance to this elongated, narrow valley region, offering an even more remote and genuine Himalayan trekking experience compared to the journey toward Manaslu.
Trekking duration: 6–7 hours
The hike today is relatively easy, leading you through the remote Tsum Valley toward the village of Chumling. Along the trail and in the small mountain settlements, you’ll encounter rich expressions of traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture. Should time allow, a visit to Chumling’s local monastery offers deeper insight, making this an ideal day to begin exploring the distinctive heritage of this secluded valley.
Trek Duration: 4–5 hours
Today’s trek goes above the 3,000-metre mark, where the valley widens into expansive basins that, on clear days, provide stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including Chhokangparo. As you ascend along the trail, the sight of the Ganesh Himal range may naturally slow your pace, drawing you to pause and take in the scenery with each step.
Time required: 5–6 hours.
The path continues farther into the upper Tsum Valley, winding through settlements that reflect a deep Tibetan influence in their buildings, customs, and daily life. As you approach the end of this stretch, you’ll come across Nile, a remote and distinctive village situated near the northern edge of the trek, close to the border of the Tibetan Plateau.
Hike: 5–6 hrs
Today is intended for acclimatization in preparation for the higher altitudes ahead. You can choose to take a hike to Mu Gompa (3,700 m), a secluded monastery nestled on a hillside surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The main attraction is the monastery itself, where you can immerse yourself in the quiet serenity of the Himalayan foothills. Afterward, you’ll make your way back down to Nile for the night, following the principle of ascending during the day and descending before sleep.
Hiking time: 3–4 hours (optional)
Today, you’ll be making your way back from Tsum Valley toward Chumling. The descent is considerably easier than the climb up, allowing for a more relaxed pace. Take in the views and appreciate the changing landscape as you travel. After spending several days at high altitude, the lower elevation may feel refreshing and more comfortable.
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours
Final Report: Trek from Tsum Valley to Deng on the Manaslu Circuit, Nepal
After departing the Tsum Valley, we began our return journey along the Manaslu Circuit route, heading toward Deng. The trail wound through forests and crossed several rivers, offering scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere. While the path is well-marked and sees more foot traffic than the quieter trails of Tsum Valley, it remains significantly less traveled than many other trekking routes in Nepal—making it an enjoyable and relatively serene Himalayan experience.
Trek Duration: 5–6 hours
Today’s trek will lead us into the upper Nubri area, a region deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Along the trail, we’ll pass numerous mani walls and chortens, reflecting the spiritual character of the landscape. Our destination is Namrung, one of the more reachable villages on the Manaslu Circuit, where we’ll have the chance to immerse ourselves in local customs and begin adjusting to the increasing elevation.
Trek Duration: 6–7 hours
As you ascend further into the Manaslu region, Mount Manaslu gradually comes into sharper view. On clear days, the mountain reveals striking close-up vistas, making this stretch one of the most scenic and frequently photographed parts of the entire Manaslu Circuit.
The breathtaking Himalayan panoramas contribute to what many consider a highlight of the trek.
Trekking duration: 5 to 6 hours
Today’s trek takes you to Sama Gaun, the largest and one of the most notable villages along the Manaslu Circuit. This traditional Sherpa settlement offers greater amenities compared to most other villages on the trail. It also serves as a starting point for two optional side trips: the Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake, both situated among the glaciers of Mount Manaslu.
Trek Duration: 5–6 hours
Today’s trek is relatively short, designed to help us adjust to the increasing altitude ahead of the more challenging high-altitude sections. The path takes us to Samdo, the final village before we begin the ascent toward the Larkya La Pass. Located close to the Tibetan border, Samdo has a unique charm and serves as an ideal spot to rest and prepare for the final leg of the journey.
Trek Duration: 3 Hours
Today is designated for acclimatization ahead of the upcoming crossing of Larkya La Pass. As an option, you can take a shorter hike to Rui La (4,998 m), where you’ll enjoy striking views of the Tibetan Plateau. This outing could also support your body’s adaptation to the high elevation.
Today’s trekking leads you to Dharmsala (Larkya Phedi), which is the last village before crossing Larkya La Pass. It is a short walk but the altitude is quite challenging. Dharmsala is the place from where you will start your crossing of Larkya La Pass. Hence, it is advisable to take it slow here as it is going to be the longest and toughest day of your Himalayan adventure.
Trek Duration: 4-5 hours
Today marks the most challenging yet rewarding leg of the trek. You’ll begin early with a steep ascent to Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), the highest point on the entire journey. After crossing the pass, the trail leads down sharply to Bhimtang. From the summit, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views, some of the most spectacular scenery along the route.
Trek Duration: 8–10 hours
Today marks both the most challenging and rewarding segment of your trek. You’ll begin early in the morning, ascending steadily until you reach Larkya La Pass, the highest point at 5,160 meters. From there, a steep descent leads you to Bhimtang. Standing atop the pass offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan range—an unforgettable highlight that makes this one of the trek’s most memorable days. The total trekking time is approximately 8 to 10 hours.

The Tsum Valley Manaslu Circuit trek combines two distinct Himalayan journeys into one experience. In the first part, you’ll explore the Tsum Valley, immersing yourself in its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes. As the trek progresses into the Manaslu Circuit, you’ll cross the Larkya La Pass at 5,160 meters, where breathtaking mountain views await.
This trek offers a unique opportunity to discover the remarkable scenery and traditional culture of the high Himalayas. Merging two adventures into one, it creates a memorable and enriching experience for travelers in Nepal. Compared to more popular routes, this trail sees fewer visitors, offering a quieter and more secluded hiking experience.
For many years, Tsum Valley remained off-limits to foreign trekkers until it opened in 2008. Renowned for its deep-rooted Tibetan Buddhist traditions and preserved way of life, the valley offers a glimpse into a timeless culture. Visitors encounter ancient monasteries, fluttering prayer flags, intricate mani walls, and historic villages that leave a lasting impression. Exploring settlements like Chumling, Chhokangparo, Nile, and Mu Gompa provides a rare chance to immerse oneself in cultural heritage found nowhere else.
At 5,160 meters, Larkya La Pass is the highest point of the trek and one of the most rewarding mountain passes in Nepal. The views from this vantage point are extraordinary. After climbing up to the pass, one can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the surrounding Himalayan peaks before beginning their descent into Bhimtang.
The trip includes acclimatization days at Nile and Samdo to allow your body to adjust to the altitude. We also offer the option to hike up to Mu Gompa and Rui La, which are excellent options for ascending higher during the day and descending to sleep at a lower altitude.
During the trip, you'll stay in traditional tea houses and local lodges, with basic amenities becoming more modest as the elevation increases and the journey progresses. This offers a genuine Himalayan trekking experience.
